In one scene in the Sesame Street DVD “What’s the name of that song,” a tourist asks the two-headed monster for directions, and the monster(s) reply: “Statue of Liberty? That way. Tribeca? That way. Carnegie Hall? (Slight pause) Practice, practice, practice!”
That joke is so widespread in New York City that the Carnegie Hall website alludes to it in the directions page of its website. But while it is meant to get some chuckles, it does emphasize one of the most important aspects of learning: practice, practice, practice.
I am reminded of this joke because when I asked Roji Gonzales, teenage son of my kumpare Jonji Gonzales of Cebu, to share his own tips on photography, this is what he said:
I’ll just give a simple tip that you may have heard many times before and this one’s not on the technical side. My tip is just “Practice Practice Practice, Don’t give up and have fun!” It’s all about the joy you get when u take that shot be it for money or no money. hehe. Because for young photographers like me, in order to make it to the top we just need to keep on going and improving and having fun while were at it.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
